Malta is the most LGBT-friendly country in Europe
May 17, 2018ILGA-Europe has just released their rankings for the most LGBT-friendly countries in Europe, and Malta tops the list. The ranking takes various factors into account, such as marriage equality, discrimination laws, hate crime and hate speech, legal gender recognition and body integrity, civil society space and asylum.
Malta, which legalised same-sex marriage last year, now ticks almost every box on the ILGA’s criteria. The country came in with a score of 91 percent, followed by Belgium with 78 percent, Norway with 77 percent, the UK and Finland with 73 percent and France with 72 percent.
The lowest countries were Russia at 10 percent, Monaco at 9 percent, Turkey at 8 percent, Armenia at 7 percent, and Azerbaijan with worst score at 4 percent. Last year Azerbaijan made headlines when at least a hundred LGBT+ were rounded up and tortured by police in the capital city of Baku.
