Manchester City star Casparij dedicates goal to trans community after Supreme Court ruling

Manchester City defender Kerstin Casparij demonstrated her support for the transgender community after scoring in a 1-1 draw against Everton on Sunday.

According to ‘Pro Soccer Wire’, following her goal, Casparij kissed a wristband adorned with the trans flag colours and later affirmed in an Instagram post that “sometimes there are bigger, more important things than football.”

This act of solidarity came shortly after the UK Supreme Court’s decision declaring that the legal definition of a woman should be based solely on “biological sex,” thus excluding trans women.

The ruling is anticipated to significantly impact trans women, potentially barring them from using preferred bathrooms, staying in certain hospital wards, and joining sports teams, among other consequences.

Casparij, who is in a same-sex relationship, mentioned on Instagram that her celebration was meant as a gesture of support for the trans community in light of the ruling.

“My goal today was dedicated to all my trans siblings, who’ve had an incredibly tough & heartbreaking week,” remarked the Netherlands international.

“You have all been on my mind and in my heart, you deserve so much more than what this government & society is giving you. I’m so incredibly proud of the trans existence within the queer community, and I’m proud of all trans women - you are women no matter what anyone says.”
