Manchester Pride to Fly Updated Rainbow Flag

Manchester Pride has announced they will be updating the official rainbow flag used at events, the new flag will include a black and brown stripe to symbolise the struggles of queer people of colour, Hornet reports.

This new flag stems from Philadelphia Pride, which updated their flag in 2017 “to reflect the modern society that we live in.”

Manchester Pride explained their decision in a statement:

For many years, the LGBT+ community has collectively stood under the iconic six-stripe rainbow flag,. But in the 40 years since its creation, the community has evolved into many facets, with each one creating and identifying with their own symbols and flags.

We have seen that the iconic rainbow must adapt to reflect the modern society that we live in.

A lot has happened, but there is still a long way to go, especially in the recognition of people of colour in the LGBT+ community. To highlight the importance of this we’ve decided to adopt the 8 stripe flag created by the city of Philadelphia, USA as part of our logo.

The flag has proved controversial, a study from BuzzFeed News found that most queer people were opposed to the change – 70 percent of gay people were against the change, as well as most white people and those of the baby boomer generation.

However, Millennials, people of colour and trans people were ore likely to support the change.
