Manchester United’s Geyse defiant after homophobic abuse: “Fight hate with love”

Geyse, a forward for Manchester United, has reported experiencing homophobic abuse after posting pictures with her female partner online. The Brazilian international expressed her hope that one day everyone will be “free to love whoever they want, without fear of judgment or reprisal” following the receipt of these “deeply hurtful” messages, ‘The Guardian’ writes.

On Sunday, at 26, she shared three photos on Instagram with the caption “I love you, us against the world,” alongside a ring and silver heart emoji.

On Monday, she posted on X: “Yesterday, after publicly sharing my relationship, I became the target of homophobic attacks. I want to emphasize that love should be respected and celebrated in all forms, regardless of gender, orientation, or any other characteristic.

“These attacks, while deeply hurtful, highlight a mindset that does not align with the values of respect and empathy that society should uphold. I emphasize that I will not remain silent in the face of prejudice. I will continue to live and share my life with honesty and bravery, hoping that everyone will someday be free to love whoever they want, without fear of judgment or reprisal.

“I want to thank everyone who sent messages of support and affection to me. Together, we can counter hate with love and work towards a more inclusive and respectful world.”

Geyse’s Instagram post received many congratulatory comments, though some users mentioned they would unfollow her. Her X post on Monday was met with numerous supportive responses, with one user stating “love always wins” and another commending her bravery: “Thank you for your courage, Geyse! Your courage to live authentically will inspire thousands of people.”

Geyse joined Manchester United 12 months ago and contributed to the club's achievement of winning their first major women’s trophy last season, securing victory over Tottenham in the Women’s FA Cup at Wembley. She represented Brazil in the 2019 and 2023 World Cups.
