A Manilla gay club’s response to an ignorant bachelorette party has gone viral. In a Facebook message to the gay club Nectar, a woman planning her friend’s bachelorette party asks the club if it’s safe. The club owner responded, “What do you mean safe?” to which the woman said “I do respect LGBT community. But I’m worried about HIV infection. Because a lot of gay now a days [sic] are vulnerable to HIV. I’m just worried that a lot of gays coming there has HIV. No disrespect and I’m sorry.”
The owner responded with: “We advise you to read a little more about HIV before you infect
our club with your stupidity.
“That’s more contagious.
“Take your bachelorette party to a straight club. Your business is not welcome at Nectar.”
According to PN the owner later said: “We were horrified that someone had the nerve to offend us while asking about a celebration with their ‘straight’ friends within our LGBTQ+ establishment.
“Their ignorance about HIV was appalling.”
He said the incident was even more offensive because same-sex marriage has yet to be legalised in the Philippines.
The exchange has since gone viral, with many pointing out the club may have missed a valuable teaching moment and could have informed the ignorant straight woman about HIV and proper etiquette in a gay club.
However, the owner of the club has said, “We stand firm in our response and we will continue to stand next to and in front of our community as protectors and trailblazers of our right to exist.”
