Margaret Cho opens up about her bisexuality: “People just don’t accept it”

In an interview yesterday with the Huffington Post, comedian Margaret Cho opened up about her experiences with biphobia, outside and within the queer community. “I’ve had this suspicion with every partner that I’ve ever had [that they didn’t get it],” she explains. “I’ve never been with another bisexual person. I’ve only been with either straight or gay people, so, it’s a very suspicious place. Nobody has ever really accepted that I’m truly bisexual.”

Even though she grew up with a liberal LGBT-loving family who owned a gay bookshop in San Francisco’s gayest neighbourhood, her family still struggled to understand her bisexuality. “My family had a gay bookstore,” she says, “they were in the gay community, they were working in and around the gay community, so they really were aware of gay people and lesbians but they didn’t understand bisexuality. It’s still a sensitive issue for many people in my life.”

When discussing the term ‘bisexual’, she agrees that the definition is limited. “I don’t know using ‘bisexual’ is right because that indicates that there’s only two genders, and I don’t believe that. I’ve been with people all across the spectrum of gender and who have all kinds of different expressions of gender, so it’s so hard to say. Maybe ‘pansexual’ is technically the more correct term but I like ‘bisexual’ because it’s kind of ’70s [Laughs].”

She goes on to talk about her first experiences with Pride in the 70s, remembering when Harvey Milk was assassinated, and how far the LGBT+ community has come, and how much further it has to go.
