Mariah Carey champions LGBTQ+ rights at Brighton Pride with 'Protect the Dolls' jacket

Pop icon Mariah Carey delivered a dazzling headline performance at Brighton Pride on Saturday, using her platform to express her ongoing support for the LGBTQ+ community.

The singer opened her set in a sparkling mini-dress reminiscent of the trans flag colors, complemented by a custom pink bomber jacket emblazoned with "Protect the Dolls" in rhinestones. The phrase, popularized by designer Conner Ives, is a term of endearment within the LGBTQ+ community, especially for transgender women. Later, Carey changed into a playsuit in pink, blue and purple, also reminiscent of the colors of the trans pride flag.

Addressing the crowd, Carey affirmed her commitment to her LGBTQ+ fans, stating, "I just want you to know that I’ll always, always be there for you." She then dedicated her hit song "Hero" to the community, prompting a massive singalong.

Carey was originally scheduled to headline Brighton Pride in 2020 before it was cancelled due to the pandemic. Her highly anticipated return featured multiple outfit changes, a full complement of dancers and musicians, and a palpable atmosphere of love and acceptance.

Brighton Pride was attended by thousands of people from across the country, joining together in one of the UK's biggest celebrations of LGBTQ+ solidarity and community.
