Max Balegde shares emotional coming out story on ‘I’m A Celebrity’

British TikTok star and current contestant on ‘I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here!’, Max Balegde, has moved both his campmates and viewers to tears by sharing the transformative experience that led to his coming out.

The reality show, usually known for its challenging trials and lighthearted fun, took on a deeply personal tone as Balegde spoke about his chosen charity, Minus18, and the pivotal event that changed his outlook on life. During Tuesday night’s episode, he explained his support for Minus18, an Australian organisation focused on LGBTQ+ education and youth empowerment, ‘Star Observer’ reports.

“My charity is called Minus18, and it provides LGBTQ education in schools,” he began.

His campmates listened attentively as he recounted his personal journey, revealing that he realised he was gay at a young age but initially intended to keep it hidden forever.

“I remember the exact moment I realized I was gay, and I thought I would just keep it to myself forever, believing that was my plan,” he shared.

Balegde then described how his perspective dramatically shifted in 2017, following his and his sister’s survival of the Manchester Arena bombing, a terrorist attack that resulted in 22 fatalities.

“It took something significant for me to realize... there was a terrorist attack at a concert in Manchester, and I was there with my little sister, who means so much to me,” he recounted, his voice trembling.

“It was just me and her, and I felt like I had someone else's life in my hands. I was upset, confused, and panicked.”

“When we got out safely, I thought, 'Oh my god, you could have just died,' and realized how I was depriving my family, whom I love, of knowing my true self.”

The personal moment resonated with many, both in the camp and beyond.

Balegde reflected on how LGBTQ+ representation and education could have significantly impacted his journey.

“If I had learned in school that being gay could lead to a happy, healthy, normal life, it wouldn't have taken something as dark as that to push me to be myself. I wish a charity like that existed when I was younger.”
