Memorial to the victims of the Pulse Massacre opens in Orlando
May 9, 2018The onePULSE Foundation in Orlando has opened a temporary memorial to the victims of the June 2016 massacre that claimed 49 lives. The fixture will remain until the foundation finds an architect to design a permanent memorial and museum.
Foundation director Barbara Poma described the memorial in a statement: “I know we all reflect on the way our Orlando community responded immediately after the tragedy, but this interim memorial is a true testament to how people continue to respond… It is just utterly heartwarming how everyone still wants to be a part of what happens here. Orlandoans truly love their city, their people, their family.”
When the massacre took place, it was the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history. Most of the victims were openly LGBT+ and – because it was Latin night – were mainly Latinx and people of colour.
