Mexican Football Player Suspended After Homophobic Slur
January 15, 2020Mexican football player Jesus Gallardo has been banned from two matches by Liga MX after using an anti-gay slur while celebrating a goal on penalties. After the final whistle, the football player started dancing around the pitch and singing a chant with explicit anti-gay overtones.
Gallardo plays for Liga MX club Monterrey as well as the Mexico national team and will be suspended on Monterrey’s first two games of the 2020 Clausura. He will also have to pay an “unspecified economic penalty due to his ‘inappropriate celebrations’,” as ‘ESPN’ reports.
Shortly after the announcement of his punishment, Gallardo tweeted: "Ni modo”, loosely translated as “whatever”, but later deleted it.
