‘Mid-Century Modern’: Hulu drops first trailer for gay Golden Girls-like sitcom

The hilarious first trailer for ‘Mid-Century Modern’ has finally been released.

Created by Max Mutchnick and David Kohan, this multi-camera sitcom centres on “three best friends — gay gentlemen of a certain age — who, after an unforeseen death, choose to spend their later years living together in Palm Springs, where the wealthiest one resides with his mother.

“As a chosen family, they show that no matter how tough life becomes, there’s always someone to remind you that things would be better if you got your neck done.”

According to ‘Gay Times’, the show features Nathan Lane as Bunny Schneiderman, Matt Bomer as Jerry Frank, Nathan Lee Graham as Arthur, and Linda Lavin as Sybil Schneiderman, Bunny’s mother.

According to Hulu’s character profiles, Bunny is a “successful businessman nearing retirement” who is “constantly searching for love, though he first must be convinced he’s deserving of it.”

Bomer’s character, Jerry, left the Mormon Church and his marriage in his early 20s “after his wife announced to him and the rest of the congregation that he was a homosexual.”

“Now a latter-day saint in the literal sense, Jerry is pure-hearted, yet also strong-bodied and a bit naive.”

Graham’s Arthur is a “sophisticated, stylish veteran of the fashion industry who feels that life would be more graceful and stylish if he were in charge.”

Finally, Sybil’s “strengths are her weaknesses: wise, caring, and iconoclastic – which sometimes makes her critical, overbearing, and morally ambiguous.”

On March 6, Hulu delighted LGBTQ+ TV fans with the first trailer for ‘Mid-Century Modern.’

The teaser opens with Bunny welcoming his best friends, Arthur and Jerry, to his stunning Palm Springs home, with Jerry remarking on its size.

The trailer then depicts the trio exploring the local gay scene, which seems less favourable for Bunny and Arthur.

“I’m just saying it’s been a minute since we’ve been out in the wild, so it might take some time,” Arthur exclaims.

However, Jerry quickly captures the attention of a handsome suitor, played by Fire Island star Zane Phillips.

As the trailer continues, Bunny proposes his friends move in with him and his straightforward mother, Sybil.

“Hear me out, we’re alone. We never see each other,” Bunny says. “You’ll both move in here. Let’s be together while we still can, like a family.”

The amusing ‘Mid-Century Modern’ trailer also provided a glimpse of the show’s upcoming guest stars, including Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Modern Family), Pamela Adlon (Better Things), Billie Lourd (American Horror Story), Stephanie Koenig (English Teacher), Kimberly Coles (Living Single), and others.

While the series promises humour, visual appeal, and unapologetically queer content, it will also have moments of heartache due to Lavin’s unfortunate passing in December.

In a statement to Deadline, a representative for the Alice star confirmed that her death resulted from complications of lung cancer.

Before she passed, Lavin had completed filming seven of the 10 episodes and was scheduled to return at the beginning of the year to finish filming.

On January 24, Mutchnick announced that the show would provide a touching farewell to the legendary talent and her character in the episode “Here’s to you, Mrs. Schneiderman.”

“Saying goodbye to the character of Sybil was painful. Saying goodbye to Linda Lavin was heartbreaking,” he wrote on Instagram.
