‘Modern Family’ child star Aubrey Anderson-Emmons, comes out

June 18, 2025

Aubrey Anderson-Emmons is coming out during Pride Month.

Known for her role as Lily Tucker-Pritchett on ‘Modern Family,’ the actress announced she is bisexual in a video that honoured her TV character, according to ‘New York Post’.

In a social media clip posted on Threads on Monday, June 16, Anderson-Emmons lip-syncs to a memorable scene from the ABC show in which Lily tells her dad Mitchell, played by Jesse Tyler Ferguson, and step-grandmother Gloria, played by Sofía Vergara, that she is gay. In the scene, Gloria tells young Lily, “You are Vietnamese,” to which Lily responds, “No, I’m not, I’m gay, I’m gay!”

Mitchell then says, “Honey, no, you’re not gay. You are just confused!” Putting on a pair of sunglasses, Anderson-Emmons laughs as audio from the scene plays, with a message over the clip reading: “people keep joking so much abt me being gay when I literally am (I’m bi).”

Her caption said, “happy pride month to all and to all a goodnight hehehe #modernfamily #lily #pridemonth #bi #pride🌈.”

Fans quickly praised her in the comments, noting that her on-screen parents — Ferguson’s Mitch and Eric Stonestreet’s Cameron Tucker — would be proud. “Omgggg cam and mitch would be so happy 😭🎀💅🏻,” one fan noted.

“LMFAOOOO!!! Mitch and Cam are gonna be so proud!!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🌈🌈🌈🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈,” another added. “Like fathers like daughter,” another shared. “Perks of having gay dads😂,” someone else wrote.

Mitch and Cam’s marriage is one of the most prominent same-sex unions on TV in recent years, with the show winning two GLAAD Media Awards during its 11 seasons. Anderson-Emmons joined ‘Modern Family’ as Mitchell and Cam’s adopted daughter in 2011 during the third season.

She replaced twins Ella and Jaden Hiller, who played Lily in the first two seasons but decided to stop acting. Anderson-Emmons stayed with the show until it concluded in 2020.

There were plans for a spin-off focusing on Lily, Mitch, and Cam after they moved from Los Angeles to Missouri, but it was canceled. “I don’t think it’s potential anymore,” Stonestreet admitted about the scrapped spin-off last year.

“They had their chance. [Series co-creator] Chris Lloyd and some writers wrote a great script about Jesse and me, but they decided against it.”

Anderson-Emmons turned 18 on June 6. After ‘Modern Family,’ she starred in a short film called ‘Tailwinds,’ about a young woman’s passion for aviation.

Currently, she is pursuing music, creating her own indie-pop songs as Frances Anderson. She released her debut single, ‘Telephones and Traffic,’ late last month, and her latest song, ‘Don’t Forget Me,’ is set to release on June 27.
