Molly Cook makes history as first openly LGBTQ+ individual elected to Texas Senate

Emergency room nurse and community organizer Molly Cook has made history as Texas's first openly LGBTQ+ state senator, following a landmark victory in a special election. Cook, a Democrat, secured the seat previously held by John Whitmire (D), who now serves as Houston's mayor.

Identifying as bisexual, Cook will fulfill the remainder of Whitmire's term until January. Additionally, she is actively campaigning for the subsequent full term and is set to face off against state Rep. Jarvis Johnson (D) in a Democratic primary runoff scheduled for May 28.

During the special election, Cook triumphed over Johnson with 57% of the vote, with Johnson securing 43%, according to reports from the Texas Tribune. Both candidates advocate for progressive platforms, emphasizing LGBTQ+ rights, reproductive freedom, and increased funding for public schools.

Endorsed by the LGBTQ+ Victory Fund, Molly Cook, a sixth-generation Texan, has garnered praise from the organization's president and CEO, Annise Parker. Parker lauded the significance of having a member of the LGBTQ+ community advocating for their rights in the state senate. “For too long, the LGBTQ+ community has been the punching bag of bigots in the Texas Senate,” Parker said in a statement. “Now, they’ll have an out LGBTQ+ peer as their colleague who will look them in the eye and make them see the Texans they’re hurting. We know Molly will not only be a powerful voice for LGBTQ+ Texans, she’ll do a wonderful job fighting for the needs of all her constituents in District 15, including myself. Between now and May 28, I’ll be doing everything I can to ensure another victory for Molly and the cause of equality.”
