More Than Half of All LGBT+ People Have Experienced Depression in the Last Year

November 11, 2018

According to a new study from Stonewall, half of all LGBT+ people have experienced depression over the last year.

The study, LGBT in Britain: Health Report, also found 61 percent of LGBT+ people have anxiety, which more than three times the national average.

The report surveyed more than 5,000 LGBT people from across the UK, it also found that queer patients found it challenging to come out to doctors and medical staff for fear of discrimination. One in seven said they were to afraid to even seek treatment.

“Health professionals ask if I might be pregnant,” explains Tilly, a 42 year old gay woman in Scotland, “and when I say no, follow up with: ‘Have you had unprotected sex with your partner since your last period?’ which, even if I had, would hardly get me pregnant.

“Having to decide whether to come out to people you hardly know and may never see again is never-ending and a little bit wearying.”
