More than one third of students and graduates identify as LGBTQ+, myGwork research finds

April 16, 2025

In an increasingly complex landscape for LGBTQ+ people, myGwork’s survey reveals critical insights into the experiences and expectations of students and graduates within this community. Based on responses from over 2,000 young professionals globally, in collaboration with Highered, the findings highlight that more than a third (36%) of students and graduates identify as LGBTQ+.

Despite the progress in LGBTQ+ rights, the survey also uncovers a troubling reluctance among job-seeking graduates: three-quarters of respondents express hesitance in considering employment opportunities at firms where they feel they cannot be openly themselves. Many fear facing bias, discrimination, and limited career advancement due to their sexual orientation or gender identity. As we navigate these challenging times, the need for acceptance and understanding in the workplace has never been more pressing.

Visible representation is crucial for LGBTQ+ students and recent graduates. The data shows that a staggering 80% believe that having visible LGBTQ+ role models in senior positions significantly influences their decision to accept job offers. This perspective is particularly pronounced among LGBTQ+ students and graduates of color, who emphasize the importance of having allies in leadership roles.

Unfortunately, the prevalence of discrimination remains significant. Nearly half (48%) of LGBTQ+ respondents reported witnessing discrimination at their educational or work environments, while 36% have personally endured experiences of homophobia, biphobia, or transphobia. These figures highlight the urgent need for active corporate allyship—a topic that resonated with 80% of survey participants who indicated a reluctance to join organizations that withdraw support from the LGBTQ+ community.

To help organizations navigate these challenging times, myGwork provides invaluable insights that go beyond identifying sectors perceived as more inclusive. Our research outlines the essential criteria LGBTQ+ graduates seek in potential employers—making it a crucial tool for companies interested in creating inclusive environments that attract and retain diverse talent.
