Musician Maren Morris comes out as bisexual

June 12, 2024

Singer Maren Morris announced on Instagram on Sunday that she is bisexual, sharing that she is “happy to be the B in LGBTQ+.” Her post included pictures from her Phoenix, Arizona show, some of which showed her holding a pride flag.

The ‘My Church’ singer had not previously discussed her sexuality publicly. She recently divorced her husband, Ryan Hurd, citing “irreconcilable” differences. The divorce was finalized in January. Hurd and Morris married in 2018 and had a son together in March 2020. According to ‘LGBTQ Nation’, over the weekend, she posted on Instagram: “Happy to be the B in LGBTQ+,” adding, “Happy pride,” along with a rainbow emoji.

Morris has been a strong advocate for LGBTQ+ rights even prior to coming out. She served as a Drag Race judge and became the first country artist to receive GLAAD’s Excellence in Media award. After Tennessee imposed restrictions on drag performances, Morris introduced her young son to drag queens, saying onstage, “I introduced my son to some drag queens today so Tennessee f**kin’ arrest me,” during a benefit event raising funds to oppose anti-LGBTQ+ legislation.

When Brittany Kerr Aldean, wife of fellow country star Jason Aldean, made transphobic comments, Morris spoke out against her, provoking the ire of disgraced white supremacist and former Fox News host Tucker Carlson. Carlson labeled her a “lunatic” and a “fake country singer.” Morris responded by creating shirts with Carlson’s words and sold them, splitting the proceeds between two trans support organisations, raising over $100,000 (approximately £79,000).

Morris has since left the country music genre, citing the racism, bigotry, and homophobia she observed firsthand. In an interview with the LA Times, she stated, “Country music is a business, but it gets sold, particularly to young writers and artists who come up within it, as almost a god. It kind of feels like indoctrination. If you truly love this type of music and you start to see problems arise, it needs to be criticized. Anything this popular should be scrutinized if we want to see progress.”
