Myanmar government allows LGBT festival to take place, despite homosexuality still being illegal

Last weekend the Myanmar government gave their approval for a two-weekend-long LGBT festival to take place in a public park in Yangon. The &Proud Festival has been held in secret for years as it is still a crime to be gay in the South Asian country.
The festival exhibits LGBT films and performances, along with games and contests. This year attendance has more than doubled, with over 6,000 people showing up on Sunday.
Festival co-director Hla Myat Tun told reporters: “I would say this is not just for the LGBT community, this is for the whole country, acknowledging equality and basic human rights.” While the festival is for LGBT people, it is primarily meant to educate the public and give a face to LGBT+ issues.
