National Coming Out Day and World Mental Health Day: a week of intersectional awareness

October 9, 2025

This week, we observe two significant days that, while distinct, share a powerful intersection: National Coming Out Day (October 11) and World Mental Health Day (October 10). Both observances highlight the importance of acceptance, understanding, and support for individuals, particularly within the LGBTQ+ community.

Coming out is a deeply personal journey, and it can have a profound impact on a person's mental health. While coming out can be liberating and empowering, it can also be accompanied by anxiety, fear of rejection, and vulnerability. Studies have shown that LGBTQ+ people face disproportionately higher rates of mental health challenges compared to their heterosexual peers, often stemming from societal stigma, discrimination, and lack of acceptance.

This is where World Mental Health Day can serve as a reminder that mental health is an integral part of overall well-being and that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. For LGBTQ+ people in particular, this day provides an opportunity to address the unique mental health challenges they may face and to promote access to inclusive and affirming mental health resources.

  • Create Safe Spaces: Create environments where LGBTQ+ people feel safe, respected, and valued.
