National Education Union Calls For Compulsory LGBT+ Lessons in Primary Schools

The UK’s largest teaching union, the National Education Union, has called for the government to install compulsory LGBT+ lessons in primary and secondary schools, reports the BBC.

The union voted on Tuesday to push for these Relationship and Sex Education (RSE) classes in all schools.

“Silence about LGBT+ people is the wrong approach, and fuels homophobic bullying, inequality for LGBT+ workers and hate crime,” said Dr Mary Bousted, general secretary at the National Education Union.

Annette Pryce, an executive from the union, said there were incidents of parents bullying teachers and questioning their “fitness to teach” in Whats App chat groups.

“It is 2019 not 1987,” Pryce said. “We need to make sure we send the right message this time to our members, our government and our schools.”
