Netflix Cancels Production of Show in North Carolina Over Anti-LGBT+ Law

In protest of anti-LGBT+ laws, Netflix is moving the production of its new series OBX away from North Carolina, reports StarNews Online.

The series, from North Carolinian Jonas Pate, is coming-of-age drama set in a fiction town in the state’s Outer Banks islands.

Pate has said one the primary reasons for the production’s move is because of the state’s HB2 bill which forces people to use the bathroom that matches the gender on their birth certificates. The bill also pushed back established anti-LGBT+ discrimination laws and blocked any changes from being made until December 2020.

OBX was projected to bring in more than $60 million to the state. Pate is calling on lawmakers to remove this time limit and reform laws so that Netflix will change its mind.

“This tiny law is costing this town 70 good, clean, pension-paying jobs and also sending a message to those people who can bring these jobs and more that North Carolina still doesn’t get it,” said Pate.

“We have a tiny window where this could be pulled out of the fire.

“If I get any sense that there is any effort to move the sunset date up, I think I could convince Netflix to change course.”
