New CDC director was involved with controversial and ineffective AIDS vaccine

Robert Redfield has been appointed as the new director for the Centers of Disease Control in America (CDC). The heavily influential organisation is the American federal government’s chief public health agency. While Redfield is a celebrated AIDS researcher, there are a few Senators and scientists who oppose his appointment.

Redfield served on Bush’s Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS, has a program that treats 6,000 patients in the Baltimore-Washington area, and is praised by the Health and Human Services Secretary as dedicating “his entire life to promoting public health and providing compassionate care to his patients.”

His record becomes murky when, in the 1980s, he was involved in an ineffective and experimental AIDS vaccine. He reportedly mispresented the effectiveness of the vaccine while an investigation revealed he had unsettling ties to Americans for a Sound AIDS/HIV Policy, a conservative abstinence-based organisation.

Air Force Lt. Col. Craig Hendrix, who blew the whistle on Redfield, told Kaiser Health News that “either he was egregiously sloppy with data or it was fabricated, it was somewhere on that spectrum, both of which were serious and raised questions about his trustworthiness.”
