New documentary celebrates courage and resilience of Cumbria's transgender community

A new film, "I ME US," is garnering praise for its sensitive and empowering portrayal of transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming individuals living in Cumbria. The documentary highlights the bravery of these individuals as they share their personal journeys and experiences.

Mason, one of the film's participants, hopes the film will inspire others to embrace their authentic selves. He recounts his own challenging journey, including initial struggles with his family, which eventually led to acceptance and support from his brother.

Producer Debbie Sweeney of Eden Film, based in Carlisle, acknowledged the pervasive prejudice that can make it difficult for LGBTQ+ individuals to feel a sense of belonging in Cumbria. According to the BBC, she noted that many LGBTQ+ students feel compelled to relocate to larger cities where they feel more accepted and less visible. "It's nice that we can produce a film like this," she said, highlighting the importance of amplifying these voices.

Director Paddy Sweeney commended the participants for their courage in sharing their stories so candidly on camera. He recounted an instance where one individual withdrew from the project due to concerns about potential repercussions following President Trump's inauguration, underscoring the very real fears and vulnerabilities faced by the trans community.

"I ME US" is part of a heritage lottery-funded project commissioned by Pride in North Cumbria (PINC) LGBT+ Youth. PINC's project manager, Pam Eland, emphasized the organization's desire to capture a snapshot of the community and amplify their voices. Plans are underway to screen the film worldwide, extending its reach and impact. The film is being screened for free in venues across Cumbria over July and August, including Rheged cinema in Penrith and Tullie in Carlisle.
