New documentary explores pioneers of lesbian cinema

A new documentary aims to explore the queer women filmmakers who paved the way for LGBT+ cinema. Dykes, Camera, Action is directed, produced and edited by Caroline Berler who was inspired after interviewing Rose Troche (Big Fish, The L Word) about lesbians in film.

Raising $15,000 through Seed and Park she interviewed several other queer female filmmakers and critics: Barbara Hammer, Su Friedrich, Rose Troche, Cheryl Dunye, Yoruba Richen, Desiree Akhavan, Vicky Du, B. Ruby Rich, Sarah Schulman, Lesli Klainberg, Jenni Olson, Rachel Reichman, Yvonne Welbon, among others.

She found, as film critic B. Ruby Rich tells her in the documentary, that “filmmaking went hand in hand with activism. There really was a sense in which we were all trying to make it a new world.”

The completed film is currently in post-production and is expected to have a limited release soon.
