New gay sitcom from Will & Grace creators greenlit for full series

‘Mid-Century Modern’, a new gay sitcom from the creators behind Will & Grace, has received a significant update.

Although Hulu commissioned a pilot less than two months ago, the multi-camera comedy, heralded as the gay version of Golden Girls, has already been given a full series order.

This announcement comes just four weeks after the pilot was filmed before a live audience, which, according to Deadline, has been “enjoying a very strong word-of-mouth internally that kicked into high gear after the table read.”

According to ‘Gay Times’, the show, created by Max Mutchnick and David Kohan, centres on “three best friends — older gay men — who, following an unexpected death, decide to spend their golden years living together in Palm Springs with the wealthiest friend living with his mother.

“As a chosen family, they show that no matter how challenging things become, there’s always someone there to remind you life would improve if you got your neck done.”

The series features Nathan Lane as Bunny Schneiderman, Matt Bomer as Jerry Frank, Nathan Lee Graham as Arthur, and Linda Lavin as Sybil Schneiderman, Bunny’s mother.

According to Hulu’s character outlines, Bunny is a “successful businessman on the verge of retirement” who is “endlessly seeking love, but he must first believe he deserves it.”

Bomer’s character Jerry left the Mormon Church and his marriage in his early 20s “after his wife declared to him and the congregation that he was gay.

“Now a latter-day saint in every sense, Jerry is sincere and pure-hearted. He is also fit but somewhat lacking in intellect.”

Graham's Arthur is portrayed as a “distinguished, graceful fashion industry veteran who feels life would achieve its true elegance if he were in control.”

Lastly, Sybil’s “attributes are her weaknesses: wise, nurturing, and nonconformist – which sometimes translates to being critical, overbearing, and unscrupulous.”

Mutchnick and Kohan are celebrated for their pioneering work on Will & Grace, which won 18 Primetime Emmy Awards and is considered one of the finest comedies ever.

Mid-Century Modern also features Ryan Murphy as an executive producer, known for creating some of the most trailblazing LGBTQIA+ stories on television, such as Glee, American Horror Story, and Pose.

The pilot was directed by Emmy winner James Burrows, who will also serve as an executive producer. His renowned work includes Frasier, Friends, 3rd Rock from the Sun, and The Big Bang Theory.
