New GLAAD poll shows eroding acceptance of LGBT+ people in America

American LGBT+ advocacy group GLAAD has released their annual Accelerating Acceptance Report. The report tracks the gradual acceptance of LGBT+ people in the US. Asking questions like how parents would feel to discover their child’s teacher is gay, or whether their doctor was gay, the report labels its responders as either ‘allies’, ‘dethatched supporters’, or ‘resisters’.

Reports from the last several years have shown a steady increase in accepting attitudes, this is the first year to see an actual decline. GLAAD points the blame squarely at Trump, “2017 brought heightened rhetoric toward marginalised communities to the forefront of American culture. Policies and headlines ran that were anti-LGBTQ including the President’s proposed ban on transgender people entering the US military, confirmation of a Supreme Court justice opposed to marriage equality, and the passage of a state law in Mississippi which allows business to legally deny service to LGBTQ families.”

GLAAD President and CEO, Sarah Kate added to this, “In the past year, there was been a swift and alarming erosion of acceptance which can only be fought by being visible and vocal.”

This coincides from a report released by the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs which found a dramatic increase the amount of hate crimes recorded against LGBT+ people, an 86 percent increase from 2016 to 2017.
