New global survey exposes alarming mental health struggles in the trans+ community

November 29, 2024

The mental health crisis among the trans+ community has been exposed in a newly released State of Trans+ Mental Health 2024 report by Voda. The survey, of over 2,165 individuals across 75 countries, carried out by the LGBTQ+ mental health advocacy, delivers a stark message: trans+ individuals face disproportionate mental health challenges, with more than half of respondents rating their mental health as “poor” or “very poor”.

The findings highlight a deeply troubling reality. Over two-thirds (67.8%) of respondents reported being diagnosed with a mental health condition, with anxiety (76.1%) and depression (71.2%) leading the way. Comorbidities such as overlapping anxiety and depression were noted in 60.5% of cases, further emphasizing the urgency of intervention.

Non-binary and genderqueer individuals, often sidelined in mental health discourse, are shown to bear a significant burden. Challenges such as gender dysphoria (79.8%), fears about social acceptance (80.4%), discrimination (70.7%), and family rejection (59.9%) emerged as top concerns among participants.

Access to supportive and affirming care remains a major hurdle. Nearly half (49%) of respondents reported difficulties accessing trans-inclusive mental health services. Many participants rely on self-help resources (51.7%) rather than professional care, with just 30.6% accessing in-person therapy. Alarmingly, 13.8% reported using no mental health resources at all.

The report also highlighted the overwhelming desire for mental health services created by and for the trans+ community. A striking 83.7% of respondents expressed the need for therapists who share and understand their lived experiences. As one genderfluid respondent noted, “Access to in-person counselling in schools that is completely confidential is urgently needed.”

Jaron Soh, founder of VODA, underscored the importance of these findings. “The need for specialized trans+ mental health services has never been more clear. This report highlights the urgency of addressing the gaps in mental healthcare, ensuring that trans+ individuals have access to compassionate and inclusive support.”

In response to the crisis, VODA has launched the Trans+ Library, the world’s largest collection of free mental health resources specifically designed by trans+ therapists. This initiative aims to close the glaring gap in care and provide immediate, tailored support for the community.

As the mental health needs of the trans+ community grow more urgent, this report serves as both a wake-up call and a roadmap for inclusive, affirming care. Download the full report here.
