A memo from the US Department of Defence outlines new restrictions on transgender troops, reports the Associated Press.
The new guidelines state that the Department of Defence will deny enlistment, or forcibly discharge, soldiers who do not serve in the gender they were assigned at birth, or soldiers who are undergoing hormone therapy or other treatments for gender dysphoria.
Any soldier who is “unable or unwilling to adhere to all applicable standards, including the standards associated with his or her biological sex,”will be counselled and given a final chance to change their mind.
“This policy effectively forces transgender service members into conversion therapy as a condition of service. It is a cruel hoax that adds insult to injury,”said Shannon Minter, Legal Director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights.
This new policy will be rolled out starting April 12th.
