New poll shows support for same-sex marriage higher than ever

A new Gallup poll has found that more Americans than ever before support same-sex marriage. 67 percent of those surveyed from 1-10 May support equal marriage, compared to 31 percent who do not. Gallup first started polling support for same-sex marriage back in 1996 when only 27 percent supported it and 27 percent did not. Now, nearly two decades later, those figures have flipped.

83 percent of Democrats support same-sex marriage now compared to 33 in 1996. 44 percent of Republicans support it now, compared to 16 in 1996, and 71 percent of Independents support it compared to 32 percent in 1996.

Gallup has suggested this dramatic increase over the last twenty years is simply because more same-sex couples are getting married in the US. 10.4 percent of all LGBT+ adults in the country are married to a same-sex spouse.

“This means that Americans are more likely to know someone who has married a same-sex partner,” the organisation explained, “and the visibility of these marriages may be playing a role in overturning some folks’ previously held opposition to their legal status.”
