New study finds children of same-sex parents benefit from ‘emotional stability’

A new study coming from Italy has found children benefit more from how well their family functions as opposed to their parents’ sexual orientation. The study, published in The Journal of Developmental and Behavioural Paediatrics, surveyed 70 gay fathers, 125 lesbian mothers and 195 heterosexual parents. The families were assessed on their parenting skills, family functioning and their child’s strengths and difficulties.

“Our findings suggested that children with same-sex parents fare well, both in terms of psychological adjustment and prosocial behaviour,” said Professor Roberto Baiocco, from the University of Rome. “Overall, children of same-sex parents had fewer reported difficulties than children of different-sex parents.

“The results showed no major differences in the children’s psychological adjustment among the three groups of families.”

Gay fathers and their children were reported as the being best functioning family units – which the report suggests may be because of the immense difficulty and commitment that goes into becoming parents via surrogacy, which is the main option for homosexual men.

Despite this study, it is still illegal for same-sex parents to adopt in Italy.
