New study finds LGBT+ employees in Asia face greater discrimination

A new study conducted in the Asia and Pacific region – focusing on China, Thailand, and the Philippines – has found LGBT+ workers face huge amounts of discrimination. Surveying 1,500 participants the study found 21% of respondents in China reported experiencing discrimination based on their sexuality, and that number rose to 23% in Thailand and 30% in the Philippines.

A further 28% reported being denied employment because of their LGBTQ identity, while a majority of those surveyed said they had seen jobs which specifically “excludes their sexual and gender identity.”

Jaco Cilliers, Chief Policy and Programme Support at UNDP Bangkok Regional Hub, said the results highlight how much needs to be in the region for LGBT+ people: “Access to decent work forms an essential part of LGBTI people’s lives and is deeply intertwined with their socio-economic empowerment and ability to participate in the public sphere.”
