New Study Finds Majority of LGBT+ Irish Have Been Threatened With Violence

A new study has found one in three Irish LGBT+ people have been threatened with violence, reports The Times.

The study also found that one in five had been psychically assaulted in public.

However, 80 percent of respondents said that LGBT+ people should be free to live their lives, while most said they had a high level of comfort with LGBT+ neighbours.

The research was conducted bythe Call It Out campaign, which is a joint initiative of the Transgender Equality Network Ireland (TENI) and the Hate and Hostility Research Group at the University of Limerick.

“Because of the ‘yes’ marriage equality success, there is a consensus that homophobia doesn’t exist in Ireland any more—and it very much does,” said gay broadcaster Brendan Courtney, who was involved with the research.

“We still experience it on a day-to-day level, whether it’s at school or at work, in the street or at night.”
