It seems that the environment is in danger because society associates genders with environmental friendly behaviors.
A study shows that straight men do not like to be associated with pro-green behaviors in fear of being perceived as gay.
This idea has had a lot of reactions on Twitter with one user tweeting: “Maybe we should just pretend polluting is the gayest thing ever and let their fragile egos do the work for us.”
Penn State recently published research reporting: “If being seen as heterosexual is important to a person, [they] may prioritize gender-conforming over gender non-conforming pro-environmental behaviors in anticipation of how others might see them.”.
The Late Show host Stephen Colbert also addressed this research and called out straight men in his show stating: “This isn’t just toxic masculinity, this is literally toxic. And as a ruggedly heterosexual male, I feel responsibility to convince my fellow hairy-chested man men, that caring for the earth is butch as hell.”
