New York will now provide the option of a third gender on their residents’ birth certificates, reports the Daily Mail.
“Transgender and gender non-conforming New Yorkers deserve the right to choose how they identify and to live with respect and dignity,” Bill de Blasio (pictured above), mayor of New York City, said.
Residents will now be able to choose between listing their gender as: M, F, or X.
“People born in NYC can now change the gender marker on their birth certificates to ‘X,'” wrote the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
“The third category makes birth certificates more inclusive to all gender identities.”
This marks New York as one of only a handful of US cities were people can identify as non-binary. Previously only the states of California and Washington had similar laws.
