North Macedonia to Host First Pride

North Macedonia, previously known as the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, will host its first ever Pride event in the capital city of Skopje, reports Radio Free Europe.

It will be “open for all to attend, regardless of nationality, religion, gender identity, or sexual orientation” and stand as a form of protest for affirmation, support, and protection of human rights,”explains Antonio Mihajlov of the National Network Against Homophobia and Transphobia.

This is the first time such an event has been attempted in the country since 2013, when it was forcibly cancelled because the police could not guarantee the safety of pride marchers.

Homosexuality was decriminalised in the area in 1996, although same-sex unions and marriages are not formally recognised.
