Number of openly LGBTQ+ American adults doubled in 12 years, new poll shows

October 1, 2024

According to recent Gallup polling, the number of American adults identifying as LGBTQ+ has more than doubled over the past 12 years. Currently, 7.6% of U.S.A. adults identify with the LGBTQ+ community, a significant increase from 3.5% in 2012 when Gallup began this research. Four years ago, the figure was recorded at 5.6%. These new findings reinforce a trend of growing numbers of LGBTQ+ adults in America each year Gallup measures these statistics.

The study notes, “Increases in LGBTQ+ identification in recent years have occurred as members of Generation Z and the millennial generation have entered adulthood.” It further states, “Adults in these younger generations are far more likely than those in older generations to identify as LGBTQ+.” Younger generations are twice as likely as the preceding ones to identify as LGBTQ+, and over one in five Gen Z adults — ages 18 to 23 during the data collection period — identify as such.

As ‘NPR’ writes, Gallup gathered its 2023 data through phone surveys of more than 12,000 Americans aged 18 or older. Among the participants, 85.6% identified as straight, 7.6% as part of the LGBTQ+ community, and 6.8% chose not to respond, according to Gallup.

Bisexual adults made up the largest segment of the LGBTQ+ population, with 4.4% of U.S.A. adults and 57.3% of LGBTQ+ adults identifying as bisexual. The data also reveals that women are twice as likely as men to identify as LGBTQ+, though this does not specifically consider the non-binary population. Gallup explains, “There are not sufficient cases to provide precise estimates of LGBTQ+ identification among nonbinary Americans for 2023 alone, but combined data from 2022 and 2023 indicate that about 80% of nonbinary adults identify as LGBTQ+, with one-third being bisexual and one-third transgender.”

Gallup also reports that about one in eight LGBTQ+ adults are transgender, representing less than 1% of the overall U.S.A. adult population.
