NYC to invest $8.9 million in gender-affirming care for transgender youth

October 8, 2026

The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has initiated plans to distribute $8.9 million to nonprofit healthcare providers to ensure access to gender-affirming services for residents under 18. This initiative arrives as several prominent hospital systems in the city have ended their own programs for transgender youth following federal pressure initiated by the Trump administration.

As reported by Them, the department intends to partner with the Callen-Lorde Community Health Center and the Nonprofit Organization for Philanthropic Initiatives. This three-year contract, set to commence February 1, 2027, will fund essential services, including hormone blockers and hormone replacement therapy.

The federal government has exerted influence over healthcare institutions regarding this matter. Early in 2025, an executive order threatened federal funding for medical centers that provided gender-affirming care to minors. Although that order faced legal challenges, the Justice Department subsequently issued multiple subpoenas to hospitals nationwide.

In response, major New York City medical institutions, including Mount Sinai, NYU Langone Health, and New York Presbyterian, closed their youth transgender programs and reached settlements with the federal government. One such settlement required Mount Sinai to fund a "detransition fund," a practice that critics compare to conversion therapy.

Advocacy organizations, including the Gender Liberation Movement and ACT UP, have held public demonstrations at these hospitals to protest the closure of these services. Healthcare providers interested in this new city-funded contract must submit an expression of interest to Tamala Watson at the Department of Health by 2 p.m. EST on October 16.

Why This Matters for the Workplace

As major hospital systems reduce specialized healthcare services, employees who are parents of transgender youth face significant challenges in securing necessary care. For corporate entities, this situation highlights the necessity of reviewing benefits packages to ensure they offer comprehensive support. Companies that prioritize inclusive healthcare policies can better support the well-being of their workforce, improve retention, and demonstrate commitment to the diverse needs of their employees.
