Openly gay and HIV-positive New York City council speaker Corey Johnson has announced he will be running for mayor of the city, reports the New York Times.
Johnson could be set to replace the current Mayor, Bill de Blasio, who is leaving office in 2021.
Johnson has vowed not to take campaign donations from “real estate developers, lobbyists or corporate PACs.” He’s also limiting the maximum individual contribution to his campaign to just $250.
“My team just told me we’re averaging about one contribution per minute this morning since I announced I’m considering a Mayoral run,” Johnson said on twitter.
“My campaign isn’t taking a cent from lobbyists, real estate developers or corporate PACs, so I need you.”
