Openly Gay Polish Mayor Announces New Progressive Political Movement

September 6, 2018

The first openly gay mayor of a Polish city has announced a new social movement in opposition to conservative political parties in the country.

Robert Biedroń, mayor of Słupsk, and an Independent, made the announcement on his Facebook page.

“I want to change the face of our politics,” he said. “It’s time for a successful alternative to PiS.”

PiS is the conservative political party that holds the current majority in Poland. They are often described as right-wing, nationalistic, and populist. Current Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki is a member of the party.

Biedroń has said he will outline a full political program in February, in lead up to his run for president.

“I know that you are disappointed by the weakness of the opposition and angry at the current government that is taking our land from us,” he said.

Biedroń is climbing in the polls and is one of the most popular candidates for president.
