Robert Biedron, the openly gay former mayor of Slupsk, has launched a new political party in Poland to counter the conservativism sweeping the country, reports The Telegraph.
The new party, called Spring, will be pro-European Union, fight for equal pay for women, for abortion and reproductive rights, and for the recognition of gay partnerships.
“In recent years we had a really tough choice,” Biedron said at a rally in Warsaw.“On one hand we had the politics of statistics and economical indicators.
“On the other hand, we had a grotesque caricature of democracy, with constitutional breaches, limitations on women’s rights, and propaganda instead of public media.
“Neither one side nor the other solved our problems. We have had enough of this war. We won’t let them run Poland instead of us any more. They’ve all let us down.
“We are the spring, we bring in fresh air to Polish politics.”
