Opposition Slams UK Equalities Minister For Failing To Set Up New LGBTQ+ Advisory Panel

British Equalities Minister Liz Truss has been slammed by the former UK LGBTQ+ advisor for failing to set up a new LGBTQ+ advisory panel, nine months after it was disbanded.

Advisor Anneliese, Dodds Labour Party MP and shadow Equalities Minister, criticized Truss for “not delivering promises” on LGBTQ+ rights. The lack of a LGBTQ+ panel captures “everything you need to know about this government’s commitment to tackling the issues facing LGBT+ people”, Dodds told the Independent. “Liz Truss promised action on this, and yet again this government is failing to deliver.”

The original advisory panel, set up as part of former prime minister Theresa May’s administration to offer guidance and scrutiny to policy-makers, was disbanded last year in March, after many of the panelists claimed that the government had fostered a “hostile environment for LGBT+ people.” Truss told MPs back in May 2021 the government would "shortly put out an expression of interest" for recruiting new panel, but this has yet to happen.

In response to the government’s failure to act, a government Equality Hub spokesperson said: “The government is committed to promoting and realizing equality for LGBT people at home and abroad. Over the last year, we have taken steps to improve the lives of LGBT people, including the launch of our proposals to ban conversion therapy and the modernization of the gender recognition process.

“Later this year we will also be delivering the UK’s first global LGBT conference, Safe to Be Me: A Global Equality Conference. The government continues to draw on the expertise and experience from the newly created roles of Special Envoy on LGBT rights, Lord Herbert of the South Downs, and LGBT Business Champion, Iain Anderson, as well as Dr. Brady, the National LGBT Health Adviser.”
