Pakistani transgender woman was shot after not being able to make change

Muni, a transgender woman in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan was dancing at a wedding on May 4th when the suspect, Mohammad Riaz, asked for change from a 1000 rupee note. When she was unable to give the change he shot her in the head.

The incident has sparked protests in the province, with trans activists blocking the main road in town, demanding Riaz be arrested.

“We have lodged a [report] of the incident and the accused will soon be behind the bars,” Police officer Mohammad Shaukat said, explaining the man was known to officers and had a criminal history.

Muni’s murder marks the fourth killing of a trans woman in in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa this year. While Qamar Naseem of the Transgender Association has said his organisation has documented 22 attacks on trans people since the start of the year.
