Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor’s new movie gets disappointing release update

Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor’s upcoming movie ‘The History of Sound’ has faced a setback, with director Oliver Hermanus confirming that it will not be released until at least next year. Hermanus mentioned to Awards Watch that the plan is to premiere the film, a gay romance, at Cannes 2025 in May, despite initial hopes for a debut during this year's festival circuit. Referring to the 2024 Venice Film Festival, Hermanus mentioned that Venice expressed interest but the film wasn’t ready, as there is still a significant amount of score creation needed, with both Paul and Josh contributing vocally to the music, emphasising the film’s central theme of sound. Although the target is a Cannes premiere in May 2025, the release in cinemas may not happen until later that year, according to ‘Yahoo! Movies’.

Adapted from Ben Shattuck’s Pushcart Prize-winning short story, ‘The History of Sound’ will tell the story of David (played by O’Connor) and Lionel (played by Mescal), two young men who record the experiences, voices, and music of fellow Americans who journeyed to Europe to participate in World War I. A teaser of the film, released earlier this year, shows Mescal and O’'Connor walking side by side, dressed in three-piece suits and flat caps.

Moving on to other updates, audiences can anticipate seeing Mescal in the highly anticipated sequel to Gladiator later this year. In Ridley Scott's direction, Mescal will take on the role of Lucius, the grown-up son of Lucilla and nephew of Commodus, previously portrayed by Connie Nielsen and Joaquin Phoenix, respectively.

Additionally, Josh O’Connor from The Crown is set to star in Separate Rooms. A collaboration with his previous Challengers director Luca Guadagnino, the film is an adaptation of Pier Vittorio Tondelli's 1989 novel, with Francesca Manieri handling the screenplay.
