Police Accuse Jussie Smollett of Faking Assault
February 22, 2019Chicago police have alleged that Empire actor Jussie Smollett faked a homophobic and racist attack on himself as part of a “publicity stunt”, reports CNN.
The openly gay actor claimed to have been attacked by two assailants last month who poured bleach on him and said “This is MAGA country,” in a reference to Trump’s infamous campaign slogan. They then allegedly put a noose around his neck.
However, new reports have emerged that the actor orchestrated the attack to garner media attention, so he could ask for a pay rise on his TV series.
He now faces three years in prison and over $25,000 in fines, if found guilty.
“This announcement today recognises that Empire actor Jussie Smollett took advantage of the pain and anger of racism to promote his career,” Police Chief Eddie T. Johnson said at a press briefing.
Johnson, who is African-American himself, said Smollett’s behaviour was “shameful” and added that, “I’m left hanging my head and asking, why?
“Why would anyone, especially an African-American man, use the symbolism of a noose to make false accusations?
“How could someone look at the hatred associated with that symbol and see an opportunity to manipulate that symbol to further his profile?”
Smollett has maintained his innocence, while his future at Empire looks uncertain.
