Police banned from marching in Toronto pride after mishandling of gay serial killer case

Responding to continuing calls for the police to be banned from marching in Toronto Pride, the police have withdrawn their application to march. Organisers of Pride initially banned police from marching following controversy last year when Black Lives Matter protestors interrupted the invent to protest police brutality. Calls for a ban have only grown in recent months following a case involving a serial killer targeting gay men – and who has killed at least six so far.

Police Chief Mark Saunders had insisted there was no evidence pointing the serial killer to Toronto’s gay village and even blamed the LGBT+ community for not coming forward sooner with evidence. Just a week later Bruce McArthur was arrested for the murders.

Saunders said he hopes that the withdrawal “will be received as a concrete example of the fact that I am listening closely to the community’s concerns, and I am committed thoroughly to building a better, stronger relationship between (police and the LGBT community)”.

However, a representative of the Toronto Police union has said this was the wrong call: “We think that this type of action drives a wedge deeper in the community and policing, and it’s disappointing to our members.”
