Police violently break up LGBT+ rights protest in Tunisia

A protest in Tunisia against discriminatory anti-LGBT+ laws was broken up by plain-clothed police officers. The incident reportedly turned violent with some of the protestors sustaining injuries as they were forcibly escorted away.

One of the activists, Amina Sboui, said she tried to raise the rainbow pride flag but was stopped immediately and taken into a police car.

The protest had been banned by the Interior Ministry “for their own safety.” They told organisers that they had received reports that they were going to be targeted.

In Tunisia, it is currently illegal to have gay sex for both men and women. Traditionally, if accused of gay sex men must undergo a painful and invasive anal test. If they refuse the test it is considered proof that they have had gay sex and they can be sentenced to up to several years in prison. The test has recently been made voluntary, a decision praised by Amnesty International as a “step in the right direction.” Although gay sex remains illegal.
