Polish Lawmakers Submit Bill to Ban Gay Conversion Therapy

Polish lawmakers from the Nowoczesna party have submitted a draft bill to parliament which would ban gay conversion therapy across the country, reports Gay Star News.

Politicians from the left-leaning Nowoczesna party worked with the Campaign Against Homophobia to write the bill after the release of the 2018 European Parliament report on LGBT+ people.

Conversion therapy uses harmful psychological practises in an attempted to change someone’s sexual orientation or gender identity. People who undergo this practice are often left with emotional and mental damage.

“Forcefully persuading somebody that if they try hard enough, they will be able to change their sexual orientation is an act of violence,” said Campaign Against Homophobia’s Mirosława Makuchowska.

“There’s a good reason why the United Nations call such pseudotherapies torture. In Poland there is no law that would ban such quackery and it’s high time it was changed.”
