Presidential Hopeful Elizabeth Warren Explains Views on Trans People

January 9, 2019

Democratic presidential hopeful Elizabeth Warren has clarified her previously murky views on transgender people, reports Think Progress.

Talking about trans issues in 2012, Warren had said she felt gender affirmation surgeries were not “a good use of taxpayer dollars” in response to a question about trans woman Michelle Kosilek, who is in prison in Massachusetts for murder.

Her comments put her in hot water with the trans community and blemished her otherwise outstanding record with the LGBT+ community.

In a statement to Think Progress, Warren said she “supports access to medically necessary services, including transition-related surgeries.

“This includes procedures taking place at the VA, in the military, or at correctional facilities.”

As well as this statement, Warren has shown her support for trans people on social media, posting articles about Trump’s proposed gender redefinition and writing: “I want every single transgender child to know this: You are valued. You are equal.

“You are not alone—we are in this fight with you.”
