Pride, progress, and the power of community: a conversation with Jennifer

Tell us what Pride means to you and why it is important.

To me, Pride is a celebration of diversity and individuality. It’s a time to come together, educate, reflect and remember how far the community has come, and how much more work needs to be done. It’s also a chance to make new friends, celebrate with old ones, and stand in solidarity with like-minded people who are working to keep progress moving forward.

In your opinion, why is Pride significant and what impact does it have?

Pride is significant because it reminds us how far we’ve come and how many people remain committed to creating a more inclusive and equitable world for the LGBTQ+ community. Progress isn’t always linear, but being part of a movement that’s bigger than yourself offers a sense of hope and connection. The impact of Pride is about unity – people from all walks of life coming together to celebrate authenticity and acceptance. For many, it’s one of the few places they feel seen and embraced for who they truly are. Pride creates a stronger sense of self, a feeling of belonging, and a visible show of solidarity for those who may still be searching for that acceptance. Ultimately, it’s about celebrating a community that has historically been marginalized and affirming that everyone deserves to live and love openly.

Looking ahead to next year, what do you hope will be accomplished in relation to LGBTQ+ rights and acceptance?

While challenges remain, I believe in the strength of community and the importance of standing alongside one another. My ultimate hope is that we continue to move forward by lifting each other up, staying connected, and remaining committed to a more inclusive future for all.

How can we ensure that Pride is inclusive for everyone within the LGBTQ+ community?

It’s important that Pride is inclusive for everyone. When the LGBTQ+ community embraces diversity in all its forms, including intersectional identities and different perspectives, we grow stronger and more impactful together. Inclusivity also means welcoming those who are open to learning, even if they don’t share the same background or experiences. Every conversation is an opportunity to build understanding, and education is a powerful tool for breaking down barriers. Change takes time, but every step forward, even one conversation, can make a lasting difference in someone’s life.
