Prominent tennis star Mika Brunold comes out as gay

Swiss tennis sensation Mika Brunold, a prominent figure within the ATP's top 300, has publicly announced he is gay.

The 21-year-old Swiss athlete, celebrated for his burgeoning talent on the ATP circuit, shared his personal news through an impactful Instagram post. Currently ranked 289th globally as of August, Brunold has demonstrated considerable prowess on the Challenger Tour this season, with stated aspirations of entering the top 200.

As an openly gay athlete, Brunold now continues his professional ascent. His announcement follows closely on the heels of Brazil’s Joao Lucas Reis da Silva, who came out in December 2024, making Brunold the second male professional tennis player to publicly embrace his identity within the last year.

Within a heartfelt social media message, Brunold wrote: "Success on the court isn't about physical skill — it's about discovering your personality and staying true to yourself." He candidly articulated his journey, stating, "I've been thinking a lot about how to talk about this. And while it hasn't always been easy, hiding it and pretending to be someone I'm not was never an option. That's why I feel it's time for me to open up and share with you that I'm gay."

As OutSports writes, this significant personal disclosure follows a month after what Brunold termed "a bitter defeat" during his qualification attempt for the Swiss Indoors, an ATP 500 tournament. In a match that could have marked his career's biggest victory, he held six match points against then-world No. 62 Reilly Opelka of the USA, ultimately losing in a hard-fought three-set encounter.

Earlier this year, in January, Brunold had previously highlighted instances of online abuse, sharing screenshots of homophobic messages he received on Instagram following a closely contested match on the Challenger Tour.

The athlete's recent Instagram post also shed light on the often unseen challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals. He elaborated, "Being gay doesn't just mean loving the same gender — it also means dealing with things most people never have to think about. The fear of not being accepted, the pressure to stay quiet, the feeling of being different. But I've grown. And I'm proud of who I am today." This candid reflection speaks to the profound journey of self-acceptance.

A wave of support quickly followed Brunold's announcement. Among the prominent figures offering congratulations was fellow Swiss athlete Marco Lehmann, a professional basketball player who publicly came out as gay in 2021. Other notable out male athletes in Switzerland include wrestler Curdin Orlik and Puerto Rican volleyball international Dennis Del Valle, who came out in 2020 while playing in the Swiss League and continues his professional career at 36.

Further demonstrating widespread endorsement, Swiss women's No. 2 Viktorija Golubic, a 2021 Wimbledon singles quarterfinalist, and the official governing body Swiss Tennis both expressed their solidarity and well-wishes, featuring supportive heart emojis in their Instagram comments.

Brunold's powerful statement concluded with a call for greater openness in sports, expressing, "I'm sharing this with you to take a step for myself, but also because I think it's not talked about enough in sports. I believe that in an ideal world, we wouldn't even need to 'come out' at all." He extended profound gratitude to his supporters, affirming, "Without you, I would never be the person I am today."

Brunold now anticipates that this personal liberation will positively influence his professional trajectory, hoping for a similar surge in rankings as experienced by Reis da Silva. Since coming out, Reis da Silva has ascended over 200 places in 2025, now holding the position of Brazil's No. 2 player. Notably, Reis da Silva made history in August when he became the first openly gay man to compete in a Grand Slam qualifying draw, participating in the U.S. Open.
