Prosecutors Drop All Charges Against Jussie Smollett

In a new, baffling turn of events, all charges have been dropped against Empire actor Jussie Smollett, the BBC reports.

The openly gay actor claimed to have been attacked by two assailants earlier this year. He alleged they poured bleach on him and told him “This is MAGA country,” in a reference to Trump’s infamous campaign slogan. He said they then put a noose around his neck.

However, new reports soon emerged that the actor orchestrated the attack to garner media attention, so he could ask for a pay rise on his TV series.

He faced three years in prison and over $25,000 in fines, if found guilty.

Instead, prosecutors have dropped charges after Smollett voluntarily agreed to give up his $10,000 bail money and the case has now been sealed.

"I have been truthful and consistent on every single level since day one,” Smollett said after his court appearance.

"I would not be my mother's son if I was capable of one drop of what I've been accused of."

The Chicago city mayor said the decision to drop charges was a “whitewash of justice,” while Supt Johnsonsaid, "the city is still owed an apology".

"If someone falsely accused me I would never hide behind a brokered deal and secrecy,"he added.

"At the end of the day it was Mr Smollett who committed this hoax. Period."
